P.S. Under linux, the initial times reported for smoutput are about
the same as for windows update time under linux degrades with the
length of the session

On the other hand, linux doesn't suffer the window freezing effect
in the session manager window.

This test code:
t=:":i. 3 60
l=:":(32?96){a.
g=:6!:2 bind 'smoutput l' ` (6!:2 bind 'smoutput t')
time=: 6!:2 'times=: }.g/\i.40'

took about 43 seconds to execute, and while initial update
times seemed as good as windows, (possibly better -- I'd have
to make more controlled tests to determine that), towards the
end of those 780 updates the updates had slowed to a crawl.

This doesn't bode well for long J sessions.

FYI,
