There is a standard "startup.ijs", which is supposed to be run
at session start. However, it only runs on GUI front end, not on
console, though the same profile is executed.

I bring a whole tool box in with my profile. The hack that
I use is to add the two lines (marked NB. ***) near the end
of profile.ijs

NB. =========================================================
NB. Bring in local profile NB. ***
0!:0< jhostpath prf, '/quedprof.ijs'  NB.  ***
NB. boot up J:
NB. note: this may load a command line script, and should be
NB. the last entry in this script. Any additions beyond this
NB. point may confuse things and cause failures.
0!:0 <jhostpath sys, '\extras\util\boot.ijs'

Here are the first and last lines of the referenced "quedprof.ijs"

% hnt /usr/local/lib/j504/quedprof.ijs
  <== /usr/local/lib/j504/quedprof.ijs ==>
NB. create / cd to jkt locale
18!:4 <'jkt' NB. doing this explicitly because we are "pre-boot"
COCLASSPATH=: 'jkt';,'z'
NB.  coclass'jkt'
NB.
   ... elided ...

NB. now change back to the 'home' locale & add jkt to its path
(again explicitly)
18!:4 <'base'                     NB.  cocurrent'base'
('jkt';18!:2<'base')18!:2<'base'  NB.  ('jkt';copath'base')copath'base'

In the elided section, I have lots of utilities etc. including
things I use for J CGI and shell scripts. This has worked very
well for me and is easy to carry from release to release.
