When X11 was originally designed, resolution was something that you specified when starting the X server, and to change it you'd have to exit X and start it again. I don't know if there is an extension to allow for this to be changed. It's quite possible that gnome has its own internal idea of screen resolution, which it does not communicate to the rest of the world. Or (functionally equivalent, though conceptually different) it's possible that there is some X extension for changing resolutions, but that the java implementation does not support this [hypothetical] extension. In either case, a program like xdpyinfo (which simply reads the server settings and reports them as text) could shed some light on this issue.. In other words, it's quite possible that Java is simply reporting a correct value which your system is configured for and that gnome is off in its own world and never changing this setting for you. It's also possible that this is a Java issue and not an X11 issue, but without investigating I don't know how that could be determined. Thanks, -- Raul
