I would also be interested in an answer to this. I investigated this
last year and came to the conclusion that there is no generic answer and
that it probably depends on the actual Linux flavour that you use. I'd
be happy to be proved wrong!
For Ubuntu and Gnome I successfully used the following sentence to open
*.xls files in Open Office.
2!:0 'gnome-open ',fln
where 'fln' was the filename of my *.xls file.
