It kind of works. But it is weird: 

 - after updating the value, the keyboard disappears and reappears, probably
   because of the focus() action. So the "click" loses the focus--keyboard
   disappears and then the focus is set programmatically--it reappears;

 - the whole page is sensible to the click event, so it loses the ability to
   select a part of page and do copy/paste

So really, buttons or links near the input line would work more natural.

Also focusing automatically pops up the keyboard, so it should not be done
after each recall. After the user found the string in question after repeated
use of recall, he/she will focus the input line manually, which will bring up
the keyboard only once at the end.

Clicking on a previous entry in the transcript can also copy it to the input 
line,
where automatic focus is appropriate.
