Wouldn't the last beginning +1 suggestion be what you need here?

It will produce up to 2 matches for  'abc|bc',
but up to one match for 'abc|ab'
for the same sequence
   ...abc...

That said, I have been reconsidering my original task, and
I have come to the conclusion that regular expressions are
not suited here.

Consider, for example:
 aa|aaa

If I need to get both matches, I do not think any regular expression
library would give me both matches.
