Start JHS with an explicit port of your choice. Start jconsole and the run:
jhs PORT Having a hardwired standard port is very convenient for most people most of the time. Not sure what to do in a situation such as yours. But it certainly should fail more gracefully and give you a message about what it happening and what the options are.
