>From a user's point of view this sounds nice and clean to me. The difference between .svn and .snp is that .svn are only created in a folder tree you designate to be a checked out repository, currently .snp will appear in any folder that you edit a file in. Your suggestion will solve this while keeping the "user interface" simple.
