On DOS ever since around version 3.0 or 3.1, a leading \\ has indicated a network pathname, somewhat like the // at the start of URLs. So, you can type "dir \\machinename\sharename\[subdirectory]" in a command prompt to access directories anywhere on your local network. This same mechanism can be used to any OS APIs, and the J APIs accept it (with both \\ and //) -- Mark D.
