On DOS ever since around version 3.0 or 3.1, a leading \\
has indicated a network pathname, somewhat like the // at the start of URLs.
So, you can type "dir \\machinename\sharename\[subdirectory]" in a
command prompt
to access directories anywhere on your local network.
This same mechanism can be used to any OS APIs, and the J APIs accept it
(with both \\ and //)
