Just to illustrate this issue:
'a' (0 1;1 2)} 3 3$'b'
bab
bba
bbb
'a' (1{.0 1;1 2)} 3 3$'b'
bab
bbb
bbb
'a' (0{.0 1;1 2)} 3 3$'b'
|length error
But I can see no use for fills here.
