I, too, was surprised that jdemo.ijs had anything to do with starting
jhs. The context in that file of the line cited as offending is:

   create=: 3 : 0 NB. create page and send to browser
   ...
   hr title;css,js,B getbody BIS
   )

   jev_get=: create NB. browser get request
   </div>
   )

   CSS=: 0 : 0
   )

IF I use the expedient of simply reinstalling the base J7 JHS system
from the beta page and running JAL for updating, will any of my
customizations be lost? At this point I'm not even sure whether or
where I put them, given that there seem to be so many places they could
go:

   J701\addons\ide\jhs\config\jhs_default.ijs
   J701\system\config
   J7-1\extras\config

and then (where Juser\config701 is my personal config directory):

   Juser\config701\startup_jhs.ijs
   Juser\config701\myJ7profile.ijs       [old: November, 2009]

I know I did some customization, but I find no docs on the web site
about how one does any customization; it must all be buried in and
spread across many messages in the beta mailing list.

I vaguely remember some file whose name includes "template" that one is
supposed to use for at least some customization, but I don't know now
where that might be.

Also, as I recall, there were several choices as to what kind of
installation to do, but it was unclear what to choose. I am the only
user and am an administrator (Windows XP). But I do absolutely,
positively do NOT want my personal config folder to be in default
C:\Document and Settings\Administrator\j701-user.
I insist that all my application data (except what's in the Windows
Registry) be on a partition or partition separate from the OS partition
(so that if the latter fails the former will not be lost, and to make
backup easier and quicker through modularization by drive or partition).

P.S. Once again, there's something in the Beta Digest mailing that
causes it to be truncated somewhere in the middle. In the present case,
the Beta Digest was Vol 48, Issue 6. When I tried to reply to it in
Thunderbird, the quoted message was truncated just before the very
message I wanted to quote, namely, Eric's!

Moreover, there were parts of the message that, curiously, displayed in
a lighter gray font color, running from the signature in my message (#3)
through Eric's reply (#4) but not including the quoting of my original
message at the end of Eric's reply!

Not sure what is going on. Perhaps you edited jdemo.ijs by mistake. I
see now that is all too easy to do and the loading of the system should
not depend on jdemo.ijs being in working order. You could examine the
lines around 91 in jdemo.ijs to see if there is an obvious problem to
correct. Or you could post the 10 lines or so in that area here and I
could suggest a fix. Alternatively you could reinstall the base J7 JHS
system (from the beta page) and then do the JAL install of the latest
version.
