Just a side note. After seeing this J code (a few years ago), I actually implemented it in C# to provide a more user-friendly progress bar to my J scripts. The J script process itself was procedural so I just cut it up in logical steps (around 16 steps I believe) and C# would just call them one by one with the really nice progress bar. The cool thing is that I created this in WindowsXP and some of the client PC's have updated to Windows 7 and it still works. In Windows 7, the application icon on the taskbar starts having the gradient coloring corresponding to the status of the progress bar. Also, another thing I noticed is that it automatically computes how long the process would take (i.e. 30 seconds remaining ...) without adding additional code.
