Some progress for me on jum/jhs using firefox: Esc t does now toggle between readonly and editable. But in the readonly state there is a white background and more importantly, the browser keystrokes such as Command+f (Find) fail, but work in the editable state. I don't think esc c is working at all on my Firefox, but esc n is working.
