I thought I'd better get started for real in v7, having continued in v6
for the last year.

I'm using Windows Vista, though I don't think that's particularly
at issue here.

It still suits me to install under my own folder, d:\j701, including
the "user" folders. The advice is to modify profilex_template.ijs
and save as (in my case) "d:\j701\bin\profilex.ijs "

I did so, with the single modification being
   user=.   install,'\user'
but both JHS and JGTK front-ends continued to report my
user folder as c:\Documents and Settings\mike\j701-user

I searched for references to the string "profilex.ijs" within all files
under j701; the only instances reported (other than in profilex.ijs
and profilex_template.ijs themselves) were in some documentation,
ie "odds_and_ends.htm" and "install.htm", both in
addons\docs\help. so I decided that profilex.ijs isn't being detected
by the start-up process.

I therefore tried inserting the relevant changes from profilex.ijs into
profile.ijs . Both front-ends now see my user folder (and temp etc)
where I want them.

So that's fine until I reinstall when presumably I'll need to
remember to edit profile.ijs, which I had thought was deprecated.

What have I missed? Should I be modifying the "shortcuts" that
open the J IDE and the J console for the browser?

I've just noticed Bill Lam's remark and your reply, both on 8/1/11:

"Bill: | profilex_template.ijs can be killed off

Eric: I think we still want to support profilex.ijs. I
will look at this and make any necesary adjustments to
both profile.ijs and profilex_template.ijs."

Obviously Bill knows something I don't. What is the new
mechanism he has in mind? Has the advice for installation
changed? I've been using J for years (not v7, though); it must be
a bit daunting for new users.

Thanks,

Mike
