Well, one initial point of confusion: I didn't realize that config files were saved in j701-user, so even though I've installed from scratch twice now, an older setting was still in place, using Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 12. As you said, Andale Mono 16 is what the default is for OSX. Set that way I get the same problem, but it's less extreme: <http://vze26m98.net/j-lang/andale-us1.png> <http://vze26m98.net/j-lang/andale-us2.png> <http://vze26m98.net/j-lang/andale-us3.png> >From the above, you can see that depending on the position of the reader bar, >and cursor positioning with the space bar, jgtk701 will display the complete >underscore, or horizontally thin it by what looks to be 50%. As I said, I think the issue is interline spacing, which is really tight. Look at the jgtk701 edit window in comparison to TextMate's on the same file: <http://vze26m98.net/j-lang/interline.png> (You're welcome to laugh at my very simple-minded J, also.) Interline spacing is probably something you should make user-configurable, as it is in (Mac)Vim.
