I discovered that if I do one more CTRL-Z than the number of changes I made, 
the 
edit window goes blank.  If I then close the edit window, the file I had been 
working on gets saved as an empty file.

I would think that CTRL-Z should not regress the file back to an empty file, 
when the file had content when first loaded.

I suggest that CTRL-Z should stop doing anything when the file is back to the 
originally loaded state.
