I should have noted that my start.ijs  contains the line:

   9!:37] 0 10000 150 150   NB. set longer output lines

So I get the full display of 995 characters  from 995$'9'

Long lines are also fun for displaying things like:

   Pi =: (2: + j.~) ": [: (<.@o. % ]) 10"_ ^ x:

   Pi 993
3.1415.........

Which is alright to recall - but Pi 995 breaks.

I should also have noted that the "funny line" recalled from the top of 
the output area doesn't require that the area be filled from a single 
expression, but is just as mysterious when the top line is residue from 
a collection of things overflowing the output area.
