The maximum size of a char vector seems to be 2.68e8; 2.69e8 gives
an out of memory" message, i.e. a=. 2.68e8#'g' is OK. I seem to hit
the same limit in a new session as in one with lots of programs & data
loaded (?). So maybe I can untar quite a bit more that 15 Mb.
