This is much, much less attractive, and I'm hoping it's not by design.
It's by design. And attractiveness is a question of personal preference: too many users were complaining about bad performance in Browse Music Folders. As this performance hit was due to the visually more attractive presentation, that functionality was stripped down to greatly improve performance.
