Admittedly, I have a really old machine running slimserver (P2 400, 384mb ram) - It was running fine on 6.1 though playing any type of file, and even still has low CPU usage and RAM always has about 100mb physical free. I've been meaning to throw a new machine at it so I might do that this weekend and pray it makes it better.
I will do a packet trace and defragment (although just about all the files on the drive were a straight copy with no deletes so I wouldn't expect much fragmentation) - and the problem is the same whether I'm on wireless or wired - although another interesting problem is when I last checked my wireless signal strength it showed up as 0% even though it was sitting directly next to the wireless router (Netgear WPN824) - it shows 0% no matter how close to or far from the WAP it is. The fact that SoftSqueeze can play at the same time over the network suggests to me though that something else may be wrong. Does SoftSqueeze require SlimServer to transcode everything? Anyway, thanks for all your help guys.
