Hmmmm. I have no idea how to get Slimserver to even attempt to look
for the iTunes Music Library.xml file. I have everything set the way I
thought it should be: iTunes Enabled, specified the path to the library
file, and set the drop-down menu indicating that Slimserver should use
the set path. I'm not sure what else needs to be set. The iTunes that
manages the iTunes library runs on a different PC than Slimserver runs
on.

But even this has since become more problematic as I tried to move the
iTunes Music Libaray.xml file to the server. I used TweakUI to effect
that move, and that worked OK. iTunes was satisfied with the new
location, but Slimserver still did not attempt to find playlists there.
So I move the iTunes (and My Music folder) back to its original
location on the PC that runs iTunes, but now Slimserver says the path
is invalid, even though the server can actually see files there. That
said, the server now consistently shows the mapped drive with a red
"x". I thought this meant that the shared volume was offline, but
double clicking ti opens the volume just fine - but the red "x" stays.
:( I believe this may have something to do with the fact that the
Server is running Windows 2K Server, but the PC that owns the iTunes
library is running XP Pro (with simple file sharing turned OFF!).
Microsloth has managed to make a complete mess of their file sharing
with the "upgrade" to XP, and I am guessing that this is at the root of
the problem. But that is just speculation.

At this point, I have no idea how to get Slimserver to even TRY to find
the iTunes Music Library.xml file in order to glean playlists therein.

So, I'm once again, open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks for your helps so far.
