Just a brief update on what I've found so far. As I've been messing
around with this a lot over the last weekend.

Using MySQL on Win XP with the 6.5b1 nightly from 2006-02-26.

I had 326 (some whole albums, some random tracks) out of 15000ish
tracks with no genre displayed in Slimserver. The tags looked fine in
foobar2000 and mp3tag. Thinking it might be related to MySQL I tried
with SQLite but it gave me the same problem, although I didn't compare
all the files the first 10-15 I picked at random had no genre in
Slimserver.

So I went back to MySQL and tried a rescan (again). I opened the web
interface early in the scanning process and looked at an album I knew
to be problem, surprisingly the genre tags displayed fine. I tried
another album and again the genre tag was present and correct. Then I
left it to finish scanning. When I looked at the albums after the scan
had finished the genre tags had vanished.

I used the MySQL Query Browser and looked at the genres table. This had
29 genres in it but some of the id numbers were missing so the highest
id was 56 with lots of gaps. All of the tracks that had the genre info
missing had a genre id that had no corresponding value in the genres
table.

At a loss, I recalled that sometimes playlists can cause problems. I
don't normally use them but I'd saved a few from the slimserver
interface trying to troubleshoot problems with Random Mix. Then Max
fixed the problem and I just left them there. All the playlists were
created by Slimserver and none of the tracks referenced by them had
moved or deleted.

Anyway, I moved the playlists out of the playlist folder, rescanned and
everything was fine. No missing genres and the genre table looked better
with 29 entries and 29 real genres.

I don't know if this is likely to help anyone but thought I'd mention
it just in case.
