phew, could hardly keep up with the responses. for anyone experiencing similar issues a solution seems to be to recode your ape files to flac. I find the easiest way is to decode using monkey's audio and then to recode using FLAC Frontend. If you're using Mp3Tag you can copy and paste the tags from the APE files to the resulting FLAC files and slimserver will categorise your files properly as opposed to its treatment of the same files when encoded to APE format.
