Excellent advice, though my directory structure seems to be different: I had to copy "CPAN/arch/5.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/GD" to "CPAN/arch/5.8.7/i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi/auto/GD".
And voilà: scaling works! This is not the first time btw I notice that files are missing in the "5.8.7/i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi/auto" branch. E.g. after a clean SVN get, the file "autosplit.ix" is missing in this branch's "Compress/ZLib" folder.
