SlimServer or Squeezebox?

Had an incident this morning where I was playing around with running
two SlimServers on my network. I can get both instances of the server
running just fine, and if my two Squeezebox2s connect to either one
then they play music. But something is broken, probably in the
firmware, where I'm unable to switch between the two servers.

Eventually I gave up and shut down the new server and just ran the
older one that I'd been running for several weeks. One Squeezebox that
had been attached to the new server now can't connect to the other. No
big deal I figure. I power cycle the Squeezebox. Same deal. I
stop/start SlimServer. Still can't connect... and now the other
Squeezebox doesn't reconnect and can't connect. Run through network
setup on both Squeezeboxes. Zilch. Power cycle both Squeezeboxes.
Nothing. Stop/start the server again. Nothing.

So I say the hell with it. I refuse to do a factory reset on the
Squeezeboxes, as nothing has changed on the network. I'm thinking,
though, that this may be the only way to get either of them to connect.
Obviously _something_ is stuck in a state that's keeping them from
connecting, but I can't say for sure if it's in the players or at the
server.

I drive to work (late) and a couple hours later I fire up SoftSqueeze
on my PC at work. It also can't connect to my home SlimServer. I
restart SoftSqueeze. Still nothing. I remote into my server at home
and shut down SlimServer, add a debug command to the service paramaters
(--d_protocol) and restart it. I check the logs and it shows three
clients connected almost immediately. Look at the web interface and
now I can see all three players.

Sheesh. I now completely undestand some of the frustration that others
have had when their SBs just plain cannot connect with their SlimServer.
It would _seem_ that something was stuck at the server that kept the
Squeezeboxes from being able to establish connections. But what would
it be that would persist between restarts? And is there something that
would timeout so that the problem would correct itself after a couple of
hours?
