I just had to do the same thing for the same reason.
Until I did Slimserver 6.5b1 said it was permanently scanning, but actually 
getting stuck at about 70% of all content - and artwork never showed up. 
This solved it.
Seems there is an occasional issue with a graceful upgrade of the database 
from 6.3...

System: Windows XP, Slimserver 6.5b1 from nightlies of 24th and 25th July.
