Updated to svn 8733 and manually deleted the whole db. Rescanning now gives me just 1 Various Artist Album and the others are all listed under the first artist (I think). I'm not sure if a wipe and rescan will return the original problem, since everytime I did one previously, the number of Albums and Various Artist albums increased and the number of Artists overall decreased - as if the db was not been properly wiped but more data added corrupting the original.
I also see that many of the MySQL slimserver db data types are now 'BLOB' (including contributor.name), so it's pretty difficult (beyond me anyway) to use phpMyAdmin and SQL queries to access the data.
