Thanks Dan. For what it's worth, I agree with you on the whole but I'm still having problems with 2 or 3 "home made" compilations with the scanner splitting the tracks into more than one album.
In desperation, for one particular problem, I used a tag editor to clear all other information in the songs apart from the artist and the track title, then changed the album title for all of them to a different name so that iTunes would update them and move them to a new folder. This folder is now stored under /Compilations/70s Funk Collection but slimserver splits the "album" into two duplicates with no logical correlation between the tracks in the two lists. But then I have other individual tracks compiled into an "album" in this very same way, that slimserver correctly piles into one album.
