After spending some time getting 6.3.* to work on my 500mhz PII 19mb RAM
slimmed down XP Home dedicated music server laptop I finally got it
stable but after a coupe of weeks started experiencing intermittent
drop outs. At this point it was recommended I might try 6.5 instead.
I'd previously installed it on my main workstation and had had a
cursory play with it so decided to update to the latest nightly (last
nights exe) and see what is was like.

I repointed Squeezebox at this installation and the firmware update
failed. The Squeezebox screen went blank. After a couple more tries I
realised that SlimServer had died. I restarted it and got the firmware
in. Then I found I could not play any music (Could not open file) as
installing the latest Slimserver exe over my existing installation
appeared to have reset the Windows account SlimServer used to a local
system one (I have to run SlimServer under my own admin account to get
it to be able to read the networked drive containing my music).

After this all seemed fine so I decided to uninstall Slimserver 6.3.1
from my music server laptop, reboot and install last nights 6.5
nightly. (BTW. I am very aware that my laptop may be too puny for 6.5,
but it's managed to run 6.2.2 for ages without too many problems, so I
am keeping my fingures crossed). Once I'd done this I stopped
SlimServer and copied over all the SlimServer program files from my
main machine to my laptop (so I did not have to set up all the plugins,
codecs and config again). I then deleted all the contents of my cache
diretory and rescanned.

Once the rescan had appeared to complete (I say "appeared" as I was not
sure my Maxtor OneTouch drive, attached to my laptop, was still
available as when I tried to access it from My Computer My Computer
froze). SlimServer seemed to have got the album count about right,
there was no hard disk noise and the software was not reporting it was
still scanning so I assumed it had finished.

SlimServer seemed quite reponsive and I was very encouraged to see that
I could play music whilst it was scanning (it's never been possible
before without huge dropouts). However it did not appear to have read
my tags correctly (I am quite anal about tags and ensure that they are
all correct and I don't have any non-standard or fancy tags apart from
COMPILATION=1 for compilation albums and album reviews in my COMMENT
tags.

However I had loads of wierd looking tracks under "No Genre" listing
(tracks from 125 albums listed!). Tracks were listed as belonging to
the wrong album (I'm sure Steely Dan never covered Slade's Mama Were
All Crazee Now) and some had taken on higher level directory names
(i.e. A-N and M-Z). Oddly there was no "No Artist" listing (even though
quite a few tracks under the "No Genre" listing were listed without
artists) but quite bit of stuff under the "No Album" listing.
All in all a bit of a mess.

I've now deleted all contents of the cache directory again and am
rescanning.

In the hope that "The experiences of a new 6.5 user" will be useful I
will report back.
