Does your MySQL installation support the InnoDB backend?
It should, but maybe the package is horribly broken - how can I check?
syslog says:

Aug 21 10:56:09 jesus mysqld[21298]: 060821 10:56:09 InnoDB: Started;

In other news, I made a parallel slimserver installation using the
latest trunk to see if the problem goes away, but that version still
complains about yaml-syck and refuses to start:

Originally I'd thought that my outdated libyaml-syck-perl was the
problem, but it's the same with version 0.67-1.
