Don't worry - I've got it working now.

Firstly, my M4A file was being decoded by mov123, not alac.

And the reason it wasn't playing is because QuickTime wasn't installed
on my (recently-reformatted) PC.

It turns out that although MPlayer can play the file by itself, mov123
relies on QuickTime being installed as well. Is this documented
anywhere??

Hopefully this will be helpful for anyone else who has the same
problem...
