Don't worry - I've got it working now. Firstly, my M4A file was being decoded by mov123, not alac.
And the reason it wasn't playing is because QuickTime wasn't installed on my (recently-reformatted) PC. It turns out that although MPlayer can play the file by itself, mov123 relies on QuickTime being installed as well. Is this documented anywhere??
