OK, so I think the problem is that we only really support part of
UPnP. We don't announce ourselves as a MediaRenderer, we only look
for other MediaServers on the network. This works fine with most
other servers, but I guess not with this one. Maybe we can look at
having more complete UPnP support post-6.5.

Can someone explain to me or point me in the direction of a primer or
wiki on Slimserver and its interaction with UPnP? I didn't exactly
understand what you mean when you say 'we only look for other
MediaServer on the network'. Does slimserver make the UPnP media server
library accessible to the squeezeboxen?

We find other UPnP Media Servers on the network and let you browse them. Of course, you can only play supported file types from these servers.

Is this similar to the way that
slimserver uses the iTunes XML library?

No, that's used to find local files to add to the library.

In the future would slimserver
possibly also work as a UPnP media server, and could the Squeezeboxen
serve as UPnP renderers?

No, SlimServer is not designed to support generic 3rd party hardware, and vice versa, our players only work with SlimServer. Making a player work as a UPnP renderer would make it pretty 'fat'.

Would it be possible for an external UPnP
control point to control media on the Squeezeboxen either through or
independently of slimserver?

This is probably possible, what control point did you have in mind? It could be a plugin, passing commands to the CLI for example.
