Yet more info: The audio stream forking was removed in official Beta 2 because it don't work yet. (I eventually had my server grind to a near halt due to multiple slimserver.pl processes hanging out, so clearly there wasn't adequate clean up.) Beta 2 thus made my hanging problems return--if anything they were worse, and were even happening with FLAC (SoftSqueeze was locking up pretty hard actually, had to kill the javaw.exe process in Windows to get it to reset.)
I installed Beta 3 this morning, and not only was the instability fixed with FLAC streaming, but I'm now streaming MP3 at 192 Kbps with success. So that's really good.
