Actually, I've found that it can cause a lock if the ajax scripts try to reference a missing image or missing id. It is the most annoying aspect of ajax for me becuase when this happens there might be a cached image sovering up the problem (and refreshes/clearing doesn't actually clear them) or it just stops processing a script with no messages, not even in firebug.
