OK, I've done some more playing and can confirm that everything seems to
work well except for when I've played music from a Live365 channel. Once
I disconnect from that channel, SB won't make a sound - even tracks
stored on my PC won't play.  The only cure is to pull the plug or (as I
have now discovered) to hold 'brightness' to reload the firmware thus
resetting the unit.  All is then well again until I play from Live365
once again! This happens when connected to Slimserver OR Squeezenetwork
so I assume it's a firmware problem?
Is it just me?
