Thanks for your efforts bpa, like you say it's not an important bug - more of a mystery as to how it came about.
I can offer an alternative workaround. Copy slimtray from the 6.5.1 zip to your server directory then make it read only. When you install a nightly it will stop at slimtray and ask you how to proceed, choose ignore and it will not be overwritten.
