That's what I'd do if it was anything other than ubuntu/debian. 
Unfortunately ubuntu/debian have a 'different' way of doing things, and
the file locations and startup scripts are all different.

Upgrade is by changing the repo to the unstable one, and apt-get
install slimserver.  It's Feisty BTW - 7.04 IIRC.

I'm reluctant to move too far off the standard path, because my server
now runs mythtv too, and I get into trouble if I break it.
