Hmm, I don't think I changed anything that would break this.  Can you  
apt-get update (I just posted a new deb) and try again?

Are using a 32-bit or 64-bit Debian?  Which distro?  Which mysql- 
server package is installed?  I want to try and reproduce.

Also can you post the output of /usr/sbin/slimserver --d_startup ?
