It's not just you - I've had the same problem.
This is using Ubuntu on a Kurobox (though I guess the
Kurobox/Linkstation connection is a co-incidence!)
The CPAN installation of GD succeeded after:

sudo apt-get install libgd2-noxpm-dev

I also needed to create, 'chown' and 'chmod a+w' directories 'Log',
'Cache' and 'prefs'.
Next problem:

[ERROR] Error message file '/opt/SC7/MySQL/errmsg.sys' had only 463 error
messages,
but it should contain at least 472 error messages.
Check that the above file is the right version for this program!
