I see the settings pages are being worked on now. Looking good, but I have some points to make:
1. Player Settings has been merged with Server Settings to become "SqueezeCenter Settings". I can see that it's nice to put them together, but in that case, they should be called "Settings", not "SqueezeCenter Settings", otherwise it does make the player settings harder to find. I'd also put the Player settings tab at the end of the tabs, maybe with a little space to seperate them from server settings tabs, or maybe put the tab in a different colour. 2. There is a Status tab, which has statistics, SqueezeCenter version information and each player version information. However, the SqueezeCenter version info is also still on the Basic Settings tab, and player settings is also at the bottom of Player->Basic Settings. 3. The Basic Settings tab contains the Rescan Music Library functionality. It seems a little strange to have the rescan functionality buried down in the settings. It's not really a setting; users need to rescan, and therefore it maybe would be better hung off the main UI, or perhaps a sub-tag off the "My Music" tab, as it is only to do with scanning local music after all? 4. There is a link on Basic Settings tab to view previous scan details, but this displays a "Scanning Progress" page, with a different page style, which for me always says "Progress information from the previous scan is not available.". If you press Home under the scanning progress page, it takes that frame into the home page. There's no obvious way to go back to "Basic Settings" from the scanning progress page, other than selecting another tab first. 5. On tabs that have extra vertical page selection tabs down the left hand side (such as Player and Advanced), the hover selection over the tags displays the background in blue for a while, but then when the hover times out, the highlight is removed, and the text is left white, so you see white text on a white background. 6. I don't like the tooltips much with the close button top-right. The tooltip remains visible until closed; it also disappears if you click outside the tooltip. It is common practice, used elsewhere in the default skin, to show the tooltip hover when the mouse is over a control, but to automatically dissapear if the mouse is moved away. 7. iTunes tab - why is it here, and not just accessed as a plugin via Extras or Advanced? It is a plugin, which I have disabled, but I still get the tab even when it's disabled. If I click the settings within Extras->iTunes, it takes me to the same set of options, but the iTunes tab isn't selected, which is a bit confusing. 8. Same with Podcasts tab - that's a plugin too, and therefore should be accessed only from the Extras->Podcasts->settings if it is enabled (or should it be called an extra?). It's in the Extras list, but the Podcasts tab page says it's a plugin. 9. Some of the tabs still have a lot of options. I quite like the breakdown of groups on some tabs, eg. Player tab has Alarm, Audio, Basic Settings sub-tabs, etc. Some pages like My Music could be extended in this way too, eg. split into some more generic sub-tabs such as "Tagging" (for things like Compilations, Group Discs, separator characters. Maybe then "Rescan music library" can be a sub-tab here too. "Software Updates" perhaps better belongs on the "Basic Settings" tab? Some other options sound like they belong somewhere in "Interface", such as "Articles to ignore when sorting", and "Text entry timing". 10. Extras tab includes built-in plugins and third-party plugins. They seem to be sorted alphabetically in two groups - third party plugins first, then built-in ones. Perhaps make the distinction clearer (a tab for each set), or sort them all together alphabetically into one list. 11. It would be nice to have a better visualisation of enabled/disabled plugins. Eg. if disabled, show in a different colour. 12. The plugin settings seem to be sub-tabs off the Advanced tab, but can also be accessed from the Extras menu. Confusing to have both mechanisms - one or the other would be best. Suggest they are only accessed from Extras tab, as it's hard to find some of the Advanced settings amongst the plugin settings sub-tabs. 13. The Advanced->Debugging options are nicer, and I like it that I can persist changes, but perhaps a button to restore all levels to their defaults to quickly turn logging back down? 14. The Close/Save Settings buttons are not east to find being grey on grey. And if Save Settings is pressed, this displays "Changes have been saved" a the top of the page - would be better to display the message near the button in the footer? 15. Advanced->Formatting. This doesn't seem a sensible place for the settings. Most of these settings, like date and time formatting, are either Basic Settings or Interface tab settings. Guess Tags formats could be moved to My Music->Tagging (see comment 9). 16. I find in Firefox on the Advanced->Formatting screen, when I move the mouse over the Title format text, it seems to highlight a load of the text. I think it's something to do with clicking to another window and then reactivating the settings window. Other than that lot, I like the new settings - opening another window is nice. ;) Phil _______________________________________________ beta mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/beta
