In "Wake On Lan", there is "Wake", not "sleep" nor "shutdown". What you want to do when machine are "up and running" is left to the operating system they run. Windows, linux, etc. All have mechanisms for doing what you want.
Several proprietary WOL extension by IBM (and 3com?) allow administrators to do much more, like bios updating, etc. But it's an enterprise level infrastructure... and this as nothing to do with squeezeboxes...
