Since I toggle one of my real players back and forth between my
production SS 6.5.x and development SC 7.x installs, I've become adept
at editing squeezebox2.version to prevent firmware downgrades. It seems
to me that the new firmware is rarely (never, that I know of) *not*
backwards compatible. So maybe the ${model}.version system should
change.
Proposal:
- SC7 should pull new ${model}.version files from slimdevices.com and
store them in the Cache dir (telling slimdevices.com what SC (SVN?)
version they're running so slimdevices.com can deliver the appropriate
${model}.version file)
- SC7 should consult the ${model}.version files in the Cache dir
- users should be able to disable this "phone home" behavior
This would allow pushing new firmwares for SqueezeNetwork without
downgrades when users switch back to their local SC7 installs, and
would allow those who swear by Firmware 15 (or whatever), or users who
don't want SC7 phoning home for privacy reasons, to keep pegging their
players at that old firmware level.
Thoughts?
