You can by right-clicking on the SC system tray icon whether you have SC installed as a service or not: if you see an option to start or stop SC, it is *not* installed as a service. However, even in this case exiting the system tray just closes the applet, it doesn't stop the server. To do this (assuming you have SC running as an application not a service), get the system tray applet running again by double clicking on the SqueezeCenter icon on the desktop or finding it in the Start Menu. Once you've got the tray icon back, right click and select stop server.
