Check out the AutoRescan plugin.  It triggers a rescan of a directory
when it detects changes.

It seems to work great if you add new files. Doesn't quite seem to get
things right if you rename or remove files, but when adding or
modifying files, it seems to be right on target.

I typically rip my stuff, then drop it into the appropriate place in my
music directory tree.  It's usually been scanned and put in the DB by
the time I hit the "new music" link in the server.

It's Linux only, and SC7, and requires that you have the inotify
facility compiled into your kernel (apparently most modern kernels
do).

Very cool.
