To be sure some Ethereal logs would be needed but my belief is Window
size which is related to buffer.  

The window size is usually dynamically changed but for some users
(usually on Windows who tweak the Window size to suit FTP and not
realtime traffic) - alienBBC connections break down in a manner similar
to what people describe with some MP3.

I think PC usually support a greater number of packets (not necessarily
size) outstanding without ack and so can tolerate stations which are
slow to send more data once the acknowledge packet window edge is
moved.
