OK - that podcast nows plays OK and can be ffwd. I haven't got the right reproducible sequence yet but it looks like playing a podcast and then some combination of stopping/clearling playlist/some other keypress and then playing another podcast results in the second podcast not showing up as seekable - I now notice the duration bar and can tell once the podcast start playing whether it has "lost" the duration.
