Rather bizarrely this issue appears to have resolved itself. I haven't upgraded Squeezecenter to any new versions since my last post, and the only thing I've changed is to upgrade the WeatherTime plugin for the change from weather.com to Wunderground. I wish I knew what caused it, but I'm just grateful it appears to have fixed itself.
