I think I found a decent way to replicate the now playing bug- If you do the Music IP trick, start playing a musicip mix and make sure the playlist isn't working correctly- then go to the home menu, connect to a different sbr that's still working. after that, wait for a few songs to pass on the first sbr, and then reconnect to that sbr. My experience is that it will not connect correctly- or will take longer than usual.
If it doesn't connect, click back. This will bring you to a half-hearted home menu, apparently connected to the squeezebox, but not fully.
