Thanks, Matt! Tried again with ~22254 nightly build of 7.1.1 .bin and it's a winner. The scan time could still use some work (like embedding/mergin the Infrant Optimized Scanner code - still about 5hrs to scan 28,500 files), but overall performance is noticeably improved. Slightly faster response time on menu navigation. Faster load of images on the SBC. Pandora (now free) working beautifully. And the Controller hasn't lost the network connection yet! Yippe-ki-yay, mofo! I don't have any playlists set up so I can't confirm if that issue has been worked out.
