For the impatient, such as myself the volume can be controlled by logging into the SBC and issuing:
amixer sset Speaker 80% where 80% is ... well 80% volume, or something. Of course other values work:) This is for the internal hi-fi full-range speaker. I didn't try for the headphone-amp-output, but I think this should work: amixer sset Headphone 80% If you knew all this just disregard; it probably ain't that useful yet as it still is quite unstable for me.
